It seems to be a growing trend among those who have trained as potters, to turn into sculptors… some succeed, while others don’t.
Devesh Upadhyay is one of those who has made a success of his choice. He has broken the mould of his Benaras training, but the techniques and skills he has imbibed have been amply put to use.
He does not succumb to being “with it” and his work is unabashedly figurative, yet not academically realistic. It is sculpturally sound with a definite ceramic quality.
His “characters” with their quirky humor, are so enchanting and endearing, that one feels they have names ! Their groupings and configurations add more charm.
The couple of years that I have seen him at work, Devesh is steadily going forward along his chosen path and I am sure he will grow from strength to strength.
