Jenny Bhatt

Jenny Bhatt is a pop surrealist artist based in Mumbai. She completed her studies in art and design from Sophia Polytechnic in 1992.

Jenny’s work often uses satirical humor, to comment on the social and cultural practices, and is influenced by Pop art, pop culture, Eastern philosophy and spirituality, alternative healing practices, quantum physics and psychedelia.

There was a phase in Bhatt’s life when she turned to philosophy and Indian texts like Gita and Upanishads, learning about Transcendental meditation. Seeking validation of these esoteric philosophies, she looked into Particle Physics, drawing parallels between the conclusions drawn by both Quantum Physics and religious texts, that all matter is energy and all energy is vibration. She then began using Colour therapy in her work to explore the healing potential of colours. Her work is often vibrant as she uses the most saturated form of colour to maintain its purest, unadulterated form.

In 2009 combining psychedelic art with humour she came up with a tongue-in-cheek digital interactive project, titled, ‘MokshaShots’. ‘Moksha’ in Eastern philosophy, refers to salvation. She explains MokshaShots as a “taste of the sublime”. According to her “Everyone can make their own MokshaShot out of anything they find fulfilling…art, chocolate, a vacation, a smile, a Ferrari or a tequila shot!” The MokshaShot series are pop surreal abstractions that explore subconscious states, as if the mind is in conversation with itself. Diving into deep recesses, the intuitive, playful mind, grapples with everything from meditative states, memory and nostalgia, to the influence of pop culture and media. More recently, Jenny has expanded her work to design, comedic performance and comic narratives.

Since 2015, she has been making editioned art multiples including sculptures based on her visual art. She also has a comic strip called ‘Two Girls Talking’ based on her everyday experiences. Jenny has held 18 solo exhibitions and participated in several group exhibitions including those in New York, Sydney, London, Amsterdam and Berlin.

In 2005, Jenny Bhatt was awarded the ‘Young Achiever of the Year’ by the Indo-American Society. Her poems have been published in literary journals including The Little Magazine and The Brown Critique. She has illustrated 9 children’s books and written a book on humorous art in 2010, besides several solo comedic performances.
