Nayanaa Kanodia

Born in 1950 in Pune, Maharashtra, Nayanaa Kanodia, is an economist turned painter. Having won the National Scholarship of the Government of India, she completed her graduation from Lady Shri Ram College, New Delhi with an Honours Degree in Economics.

Except for a year-long apprenticeship with Anjolie Ela Menon – one of India’s leading contemporary artists – Nayanaa is a self-taught artist. “I do not regard art as a universe separate and remote from the concerns of ordinary living. I have anticipated the modern notion of reality as a dialectical interplay of the visible and the feasible, of knowledge and vision. Waking life and the life of dreams flow together.”

Nayanaa’s work typifies characteristics of the l’Art Naïf genre – the air of whimsy, the flat bright polished surfaces, vibrant and dynamic colours, and the extraordinary plethora of intricately worked details and patterns. The freshness and charm of the images she creates, gives a crystalline utopian appearance to the mundane everyday life being depicted. She reflects on the charming idiosyncrasies of her subjects with some degree of wit and gentle satire. Her paintings portray India, yet the social messages that they carry and Nayanaa’s inspirations are universal.

Due to Kanodia’s contributions to L’Art Naïf, she was invited by the world-renowned Victoria and Albert Museum in London in 2001 to exhibit and demonstrate her painting techniques in the gallery. Her works are permanently displayed at Musée d’Art Naïf Max Fourny – Halle Saint Pierre in Montmartre in Paris. A consortium of schools in Los Altos, USA, is using her work as a medium of instruction to their students. She was also honoured with an award by Megh Mandal Sansthan, Ministry of Culture, Govt. of India in 2016.

On her work, ‘Beyond the Scenes’, she says, “Each depiction is charged with innocuous humour personifying the subtle ironies that permeate daily life, which lay in conflict with the collision of the East and West – A moment is built up in which whole histories and relationships are made visible. These paintings are moments of pleasure held forever. They are about time and time in paintings is movement stilled. There is a sense of fun that is sometimes picturesque, that verges hesitantly on the erotic but excels in the shrewd tongue-in-cheek observation of individual psychology and the customs and manners of groups.”
