Suhas Roy

“The dark side of humanity and cruelty is what leads me in my search of the unknown.” Suhas Roy

Suhas Roy (1936-2016) was a versatile painter who was born in Bangladesh. He studied painting at the Indian College of Arts and Draftsmanship, Calcutta, followed by graphic arts under the tutelage of Prof. S.W. Hayter at the Atelier 17 Ecole Superior Des Beaux Arts, Paris between 1956 – 1966.

Roy worked primarily with the female face and form. His subjects are romanticised, inhabiting the dreamlike world between sensuality and innocence. His themes are as much influenced by the everyday world as they are rooted in fantasy. The mystical flavour of his works arose from his interpretations of the ‘unknown’. It is his craftsmanship and consummate skill that ensures that his richly romantic subjects do not touch extreme syrupy and stereotypical portrayals. Instead, their very patent beauty veers towards melancholic grace and elegance. His graceful portrayal of his subjects has much to do with his choice of materials – his crayons, charcoal and brush have sensitivity and refinement.

Some of his most notable works include his series on Radha, the mythological character. They exude a fine mix of beauty, melancholic grace, elegance and simplicity with quality of inhabiting a dreamlike world that can oscillate between sensuality and innocence. Another of his works is his painting of Jesus, ‘Bridging the Gaps…Through the Gospel’, depicting the face of Jesus portraying pain and agony. This painting caught the attention of a Vatican City representative and is now a part of the prestigious collection of the Vatican, a rare honour for any artist.

Suhas Roy’s works have been exhibited all over the world through exhibitions like the Asian Graphic Prints Traveling Exhibition, USA, the Tokyo Print Biennale, Japan, Contemporary Indian Art, Yugoslavia, Romania, Czechoslovakia, Hungry, and Wounds, at the Central Institute Modern Art, New Delhi, and the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi.
